Episode 102:  About Abby and the Ex

With her big hair, big voice, and big stage presence, Amani delivers a smooth sound that blurs the lines between soul, pop, and R&B.  Her debut EP, “Match Play,” Plays as a sweet and spunky tribute to fun, love, and the love of having fun.

The theatricality and movement in her videos and performances stem from her experience as an all around performance artist. Raised under the diverse musical influences of Kansas City, MO, Amani identified with people from all walks of life through music, dance, and drama.  Amani majored in Theater at Yale University and received extensive professional training in contemporary dance, voice, and drama in Kansas City, NYC and LA. She has worked with Academy Award and Golden Globe winning actors and directors, and she’s starred in national commercials, concerts, music videos, rock operas, musicals, and independent films.

Venus Infers comes from Orange County, but it is not an Orange County band. Our influences range from The Velvet Underground (who’s song ‘Venus In Furs’ inspired the band name*), The Stones, Beatles, and Kinks to modern groups like The Strokes, Kings of Leon, and Arctic Monkeys. All this while avoiding the sound of so many tired-late-night-pick-your-decade-to-tribute indie rock bands. Venus Infers plays Rock N Roll the way it was designed: passionate, expressive, and honest.

Episode 103:  About Abby and the Musician

Nu Skiffle is a new music genre (someone had to do it) wherein the old kitchen utensils have been replaced by electronic kitchen utensils.

Some old Scat Cats from the early thirties have been sampled for digital posterity and dressed up in new emperor's clothing. And like Original Skiffle, Nu Skiffle is all about having percussive fun.

Unlike a lot of singer/songwriters, Kaylinn's lyrics aren't really about a time in her life or a personal experience. Instead, they'll tell the tale of a fictional somebody or the life of a person she'll pass by on the street. Its through these stories that she is able to make sense of her own point of view. Whereas Kaylinn has always been hesitant to play beyond her living room, her brother Corey has pushed her to strum more and sing louder. Despite his three year lead, the two often get mistaken for twins, though they will tell you how completely different they are from each other. Their bond since childhood is mirrored in the way the make music-- a fusion that allows Kaylinn's intricate folk slaps to rest on Corey's carpeting bass line. Drummer-man Jeff Mifflin tells his own story, tapping away at every square inch on his drum set, creating a blend of wisps and cracks that make the songs tasteful and textured.

Dovely's sound is something real, genuine, passionate and compassionate. They just released their first five-song E.P. called On My Way which will be for sale at their live shows, sprouting from the Monterey Bay area. Otherwise, keep an ear out, as these kids are just getting started, and are on the right path to keep the music train going.

WORD Magazine: "A terrific LP full of incidental music for soothing the savage breast and making you look forward to summer. If you don't like this record, well, get over yourself."

Adam Walton, BBC Wales Music Blog: "Breathtaking in a most unshowy way. Life Stream is as accomplished, thoughtful and lovingly-crafted as any album will hear this year. Essential listening."
